Zealand Coast to Coast is a multi-activity trail run on the South Island, spanning 188.2 miles (303 km) from Ross on the west coast to New Brighton on the east coast. The route takes you through a variety of landscapes, from crashing surf to ancient forests reminiscent of Jurassic Park. Competitors participate in a "light" race that lasts over two days, alternating between running, cycling, and kayaking. The race presents challenges such as river crossings and elevation changes, making it a test of both coordination and strength.
Highlights
- Competitors leave on foot from the black sandy beaches and the lush, windy landscapes of the West Coast.
- The 30.5 km race is primarily off-trail with rocky riverbeds and several river crossings with icy cold, crystal clear water.
- The river section of 70 km along the Waimakariri River is for many both the highlight and the crux of the race, featuring both calm stretches and rapids up to grade 2.
